The town of Tamsui 淡水 is a nice place for a day trip from Taipei. Highly recommend the Red Castle 1899 for a meal in a historic home with views of the Tamsui River and the Chi Po-lin Museum and Foundation with a beautiful bilingual exhibit of aerial photography of Taiwan’s river ecosystems. There’s also an art gallery and historic buildings and streets in the neighborhood.
